The best way to train bite inhibition in puppies is playfully but consistently. The aim of the training is that your dog understands that he must not use his teeth too firmly in the game. If children live in the household, for the sake of simplicity, teach your puppy that he must not bite people, not even gently.
This is how your puppy learns bite inhibition when playing
In order to train your dog to stop biting, you need some rest, time and patience, as well as a dog toy that your puppy can safely grasp with its teeth. If you see dogs playing with each other with their siblings or their parents, you can easily learn how to teach your puppy to inhibit biting. As soon as a puppy bites too hard while maneuvering, its play partner whines briefly and interrupts the romp. The dog mother may still use the snout handle in the case of particularly cheeky offspring, which is sometimes recommended as a means of education for people. However, there is a lot you can do wrong as a person, so it is particularly recommended to stop playing as a training method.
As soon as your puppy pinches your hand, arm or calf while playing, say "Aua" and stop playing. When the little four-legged friend has calmed down again, start the game again. As long as your dog only bites into the toy, the frenzy continues, the game will only be interrupted if he hits you with his teeth. Little by little he realizes that he must not pinch you when he is playing with you, as this immediately leads to the end of the pleasure.
Exaggerated puppy? Train bite inhibition through time-outs
Sometimes, however, this is not enough to train the young dog to stop biting. If your puppy is too over the top and cocky while playing, he is not receptive enough to understand the principle that the game will only continue if he does not bite. In this case, walk away briefly or carry the puppy briefly to another room if he puts his teeth in while playing. A few minutes are enough - it should not be a punishment, but an aid for the young dog to curb his excitement. This works better with a little break than if the game continues. After the short break, you can train the bite inhibitor again and repeat the game interruptions and short breaks until your puppy has learned his lesson.
Puppy toys: activity for small dogs
Playing is fun! Of course not only adult dogs find this, but also puppies ...
Children and dogs: Bite inhibition is particularly important to learn
Training bite inhibition should be taken over by adults or older children who can play responsibly and calmly with the dog. Small children cannot yet assess their strength and must first learn how to deal with dogs, and do not yet have the inner peace and security to express themselves clearly to the dog.
If your puppy was unable to learn the bite inhibition correctly, accidents can easily occur when playing with children. Therefore, from the start, teach your dog using the above methods that he can only use his teeth when playing with objects. Nevertheless, children and dogs should never be left unattended, no matter how well behaved the four-legged friend is. If you have an adult dog without bite inhibition, it is best to get help from an experienced dog trainer.
