Occasionally, cat food is not harmful to dogs, just as little as dog food for cats. If your pets have tried a bite from their roommate's bowl, you do not have to call the veterinarian straight away. However, dogs and cats need their own special food for permanent healthy nutrition.

Why cat food is unhealthy for dogs in the long term

In the long term, you should not give cat food to dogs as they are not pure carnivores. The main food for dogs should be meat, but they also need vegetables to stay healthy. Cat food contains more fat and more protein than dog food, is more energetic and also enriched with taurine. If dogs eat cat food regularly, they will become overweight because they will consume too many calories if they consume filling portions of it. In addition, the four-legged friends do not need any additional taurine and they do not tolerate the high protein content so well in the long term. Indigestion such as bloating and diarrhea, kidney problems or allergies to protein can occur.

Why dog food for cats does not live up to its diet

Dog food for cats is even less favorable than vice versa. Cats are pure carnivores and digestion is very sensitive compared to dogs. In order for them to stay healthy, they need small portions of food throughout the day, longer breaks in eating lead to excessive acidification of the stomach and large portions spoil the cat's stomach at once, which is also problematic. If a cat receives dog food, it will probably only eat small bites of it throughout the day. Because dog food for cats contains too few calories, too little fat and too little protein, it does not get enough energy and nutrients.

In addition, she lacks taurine, which in the long term can lead to dull fur, eye diseases and even blindness as well as heart problems. At the same time, your cat can not do anything with the fiber and the higher vegetable content in the dog food - these nutrients are excreted unused. Dog food for cats can also lead to diarrhea, just like cat food for dogs.

Communication: Bringing the cat and the dog together

Are cats and dogs naturally enemies? No! The only thing missing is the right communication. Dogs-…

Feed dogs and cats separately

The mentioned deficiency symptoms and digestive problems only occur if you regularly give the wrong food. But even if the animals do not immediately get sick from small trial bites in the meantime, they have no advantage in not eating animal-friendly food. The best thing is, you ensure that your pets get suitable food in peace and keep a little eye on the nutrition of your fur noses. Dogs can usually gulp down large portions at once, and if you have a particularly voracious representative at home, they may eat the remaining cat food right away because your kitty wanted to keep the rest for later. The result: the dog becomes overweight, the cat may not have enough food and nutrients.

The easiest solution to this problem is not to feed the animals in the same room at the same time. Separate them either in time or space and place the cat food that left your velvet paw covered with cling film in the fridge until it is feeding time again. This way, your dog cannot treat the leftovers comfortably. Your cat can also eat in peace and digest food without your dog bothering you because he wants to get some of his food.
