180+ Cute Yorkie Names for Your Tiny Terrier

My name is Tatiana, but my friends and family call me Tutta. I love writing articles that bring a little creativity to everyday life.

Who can resist the cuteness overload from simply looking at a dog small enough to fit in a purse? Not me! If you are looking for a small dog to add to your family, one of the breeds you absolutely need to consider is a Yorkshire Terrier or a “Yorkie,” as they are often called.

Are You Considering Adopting a Yorkie?

There is no doubt that this breed is a favorite for many. Their sweet faces and gentle demeanor make them great, little companions for anyone looking for a new pet. With that said, there are some other things to consider before you adopt a Yorkshire Terrier:

They Require Proper Grooming

If you’ve ever watched a dog show, chances are you have seen these adorable, brown faces with a black or salt and pepper body, and just how long their hair can get! Show dogs are often allowed to grow their hair out until it reaches the floor like a little sweeper on the move!

With their ever-growing hair, they require frequent grooming and haircuts, with brushing at least once daily to avoid tangles and mats. Many Yorkie owners learn how to groom their dog on their own, keeping the hair much shorter yet still breed-specific. This alone helps save hundreds a year on grooming costs.

They Can Have Loud Voices

Although small, this breed often doesn't know its size and will surely vocalize when it sees unfamiliar faces—humans or canines—approaching the house. Rest assured that the bark is worse than its bite!

They Can Be Timid

They make terrific little companions for older people, but may be more fearful when it comes to children. If the Yorkie will be around children, it needs to be trained from a puppy to get along with kids.

They Can Be Difficult to Train

Most training for a Yorkie needs to be taught from a very young age to prevent bad habits from setting in. One of the bigger struggles with this breed is housebreaking them, so it helps to keep some kind of piddle pad in the house for those just-in-case moments. Other than that, teaching them not to be overly protective of their food, leash manners (they hate leashes!), and to not bark unnecessarily needs to start at puppyhood and be consistently reinforced in order to make good progress.

A lot of the hardest parts of having a Yorkie can be avoided by adopting an older one from an animal shelter. The dogs in shelters usually go through temperament tests and multiple reviews before they are put up for adoption, and any special personality traits will be noted on their cage cards.

Need Help Deciding on a Name?

Naming a Yorkie doesn’t have to be hard. You already have the perfect inspiration right next to you—your Yorkie! Here are a few things to help you think of some good Yorkie names:

  • Personality: Just like people, your Yorkie’s personality will differ from other Yorkies! Take a few days to really learn about your dog and it will give you a few ideas for names!
  • Colors: Although Yorkies generally have the same fur pattern, the colors can differ slightly which makes it easier to find color-inspired names! For example, Is the brown face closer to a walnut brown or a mocha brown?
  • Family input: If you won’t be the sole companion to that sweet little pup, then others in the family might have some great ideas and would love to be involved in choosing a name!
  • Yorkie’s input: If you’re stuck between a few names, there are ways that your dog can help! Label individual pieces of paper with the names you like and place either dog food or dog treats on each one; whichever one it eats from first is the name it chose! Another way your dog can help is to call it by different names and see if it naturally responds better to one of the names above the others.

You’ll just know when you find that perfect name, and so will your pup!

What are The Best Yorkie Names

The best names for Yorkies are the one that are easy for you to say and easy for your pet to understand.

Go for a name that suits both you and your dog’s personality.

We will show you several things, which you should consider to make the process easier:

Personality:

The personality of one person differs from that of another person and this is true for Yorkies as well.

So take some time to get to know your dog and this will help you choose a name!

The hair pattern of Yorkies is generally the same but the color may slightly differ which can help you find a name that is inspired by the color.

Family input:

If the dog will be a family pet, ask the other members of your family to share their ideas for name with you!

Yorkie’s input: (This is like a game)

If you have stopped on a few names and do not know which one to choose, the Yorkie can also help you.

Write down the different names on different pieces of paper and place dog treats or food on each of them.

Let the Yorkie choose which treat it wants first and pick the name on the piece of paper under it.

Alternatively, simply call the dog with the different names and see if it responds better to one of them.

You will understand when you have found the perfect Yorkie name!

We also have some rules for you:

Remember that the name of your dog should be with two syllables names with three or more syllables are not appropriate for your pup.

Still, if you really like one three-syllable word and want to name the dog with it, ensure that you have a nickname for the name, which you can use.

If you have other pets, do not name the new dog with a name that sounds familiar to the name of some of your other pets for this will be confusing for both of them.

Do not name the pet with a name that sounds too familiar to one of the training commands which you will use for this will make the training harder and will confuse your dog.

Do not give your pet an overused dog name like Max or Bella (yes they are in our list but keep that in mind!).

Each dog has its own history and is an individual so it deserves its own unique name!
