For the mating of dogs to be smooth, the first factors to be aware of are the size and breed of the animals. The male of the couple must be of equal size, very similar or even smaller than that of the female (since, in cases where the female is much smaller than the male, this creates serious problems during pregnancy; it may even take the dog death), and the breed of dogs must be the same.

That done, it's time to investigate the health conditions of dogs that will breed, since none of them can have illnesses or be in poor health. Choosing dogs with a calmer and more docile temperament is also a good choice, since in many cases, a very aggressive female can seriously hurt her partner. If the pets already know each other, the process becomes a little simpler, since many bitches tend to reject unknown males at the time of mating.

The best place for mating to take place is where the male lives, and preferably away from where the dog lives - as the heat attracts a number of candidates for breeding, and the dog must be in a place where the territory be yours alone. If this is not possible, the best option is to introduce the dog to a new location at least one week before breeding - giving him time to mark his territory and feel at ease in the environment.

In addition to the aforementioned care, it is also important to respect the right time for each dog to mate, and males can start activities from the 18th month of life; while what is indicated for bitches is that the cross occurs only after your third heat.

As is already known by many, the heat of the bitches is the main indicator of availability for mating. Lasting an average of 15 days, it is usually around the eighth day of the cycle that the female begins to accept the males - the tenth day being the most favorable for fertilization to work (since, in most cases, it is when the dog's ovulation occurs).

From that day on, the female can mate until the end of the cycle (or until she starts rejecting the males again), and if the cross is made with more than one male, there is a possibility that the dog has children of different parents. Although mating can occur with more than one partner, the most recommended time for breeding is that the canine couple can stay together for about two days - being possible, in this way, to determine the date of fertilization and to predict the birth of the litter; which should take place in about two months.

Crossbreed of cats

Just as in the case of dog mating, attention should be paid to breed, size and health in order to plan the breeding of cats, preventing problems in the pregnancy and childbirth, and in the development of new pussies. It is important to remember that obese cats should not breed, as well as debilitated cats - since, during pregnancy, no type of medication (such as vaccines and worms) should be administered to the animal.

In the case of cats, estrus is also the main indicator of their sexual maturity and availability for crossbreeding - however, unlike female dogs, felines do not bleed during their cycles and, in order to identify this period, cats exhibit a series of very characteristic and unobtrusive behaviors.

In most cases, it is around ten months of age that the cats show their first signs of sexual maturity; however, until they have completed at least one year of life or have passed through their third heat, it is not recommended that they mate. Lasting between 4 and 7 days, the heat of the cats occurs due to a series of factors (including climate, breed and even the length of the coat), and is the ideal time for it to be fertilized.

Walking around on the floor, rubbing against furniture in the house, purring too much and meowing louder than usual are some of the main signs that a cat is in heat; therefore, if your desire is to cross your pet, make sure you have found your ideal partner in advance - since, although another cycle will occur in about twenty days, the mating period is considerably short.

Males, who reach sexual maturity at around twelve months of age, also exhibit characteristic behaviors when they feel the presence of a female in heat nearby - and the release of strong-smelling urine jets is the main way that pussies have to mark territory. Attracted by the loud meows and the strong odor that the females release to indicate sexual availability, many cats end up gathering close to where the cat is - and it is not uncommon for "battles" to occur in these situations, so that the female can mate with the winner of the fight, considered the most “manly” cat and, therefore, more apt to cross.

As in the case of female dogs, many cats can refuse the onslaught of the males until they are ready for breeding and, when this occurs, the felines clearly demonstrate their availability: lying down with the rear raised and the tail on the side. Incredible as it may seem, the ovulation of the cats only occurs from coitus and, therefore, many attempts may be necessary for fertilization to occur - giving rise to the puppies that must be born about two months after mating.

Crossbreeding of animals with kinship

As previously mentioned, a series of precautions must be taken so that the crossing of animals happens without complications; and avoiding mating between animals with some kind of relationship is an extremely important measure to avoid problems. As in the case of human beings, the generation of children of consanguineous animals can result in puppies with very serious genetic mutations, including the appearance of several physical and neurological problems.

The absence of organs, the lack of body parts, the malformation of limbs and deformations are just some of the possibilities that can occur when the crossbreeding is done between dogs or cats of very close kinship - as between parents and children, brother or cousins - so, if you have several pets that have not been neutered in your home and have different genders, stay tuned; because their sexual instinct does not take kinship into consideration.
